A halal way forward
Is there a halal way out of debt?
Yes. Here's how UK Muslims can deal with debt without taking on new riba, in plain English.

Yes, there is a halal way out of debt. In the UK you can deal with what you owe without taking on any new interest (riba). The halal approach is not usually a new loan. Real halal debt relief means facing the debt honestly, then using free, regulated solutions that reorganise or reduce your existing debt without adding riba, alongside interest-free hardship help where it's needed.

Is there such a thing as a halal loan to clear debt?
Honestly, no. There is no mainstream "halal loan" in the UK designed to consolidate personal debt. Islamic finance here is mostly home finance and business finance. More importantly, taking on more borrowing to pay off debt (even a Sharia-structured product) is rarely the answer scholars point to. For most people, the halal path is to stop borrowing and instead deal with the existing debt.
Is debt consolidation halal?
A consolidation loan that charges interest is not halal, because it simply moves you into new riba. But you can effectively bring your debts together and repay them in one manageable plan without any new interest, through a regulated debt solution such as a Debt Management Plan. So the goal (one affordable arrangement) is achievable the halal way; it just isn't done with an interest-bearing loan.
What are the halal ways to deal with debt in the UK?
Several established UK debt solutions reorganise or reduce your existing debt and add no new interest, which keeps them free of fresh riba. An FCA-authorised debt adviser assesses which (if any) suits you:
- •A realistic budget & repayment plan: often the first and most dignified step.
- •Debt Management Plan (DMP): one affordable monthly payment split between your creditors, often with interest frozen.
- •Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA): a formal agreement to pay what you can over a set period, with any remaining balance written off if the plan is completed.
- •Debt Relief Order (DRO): for low income and few assets; debts are written off after a period.
- •Bankruptcy: a fresh start when debts are unmanageable by other means.
None of these lend you money or charge you interest; they deal with the debt you already have.
What is Qard Hasan, and where can I get one?
Qard Hasan is a benevolent, interest-free loan in Islam: money lent purely to help, where you repay only what you borrowed, with no interest and no profit. It's the closest thing to a genuinely "halal loan," and in the UK it's offered by charities and mutuals for those in real hardship. Our Urgent help page lists trusted starting points, including zakat-based hardship grants.
What about the interest I already owe?
Many Muslims carry interest-based debt through no fault of their own, and there is no shame in it. The focus is on moving forward: getting the interest frozen or the debt restructured, repaying what you can, and avoiding new riba from here on. A regulated adviser can often get interest and charges stopped as part of a solution.
